Elderly Patient Death in Mexico City Hospital

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) concluded that an elderly person died after receiving inadequate medical care at facilities of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Mexico City, according to Recommendation 15/2026. The body documented that the person was admitted on September 13, 2021, to the General Hospital of Zone with Family Medicine Unit number 8 (HGZ-8) due to hematuria and chronic-degenerative ailments, without a comprehensive assessment appropriate to their condition being carried out. Subsequently, they underwent surgery in which a kidney was removed; however, the next day it was detected that during the procedure the duodenum had been perforated, which led to their transfer to the High Specialty Medical Unit of the National Medical Center Siglo XXI. The CNDH pointed out that in this second unit, the patient's health worsened because timely attention maneuvers were not applied when they were found unconscious, and the intervention from the resuscitation area was delayed. Likewise, the body indicated that medical protocols, diagnostic studies, and analyses to rule out complications were omitted, in addition to the clinical necropsy not being performed properly.

The Commission determined violations of the rights to health, life, dignified treatment, and information in medical matters. For this reason, it requested the IMSS to repair the damage to the family, provide psychological care, and collaborate in the corresponding administrative and criminal investigations, in addition to strengthening the training of health personnel.
